Critical Measurements Following Qualifiers and Races to Help Honda Meet New Formula One Regulations

WALTHAM, MA -- June 5, 2007 -- PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences, a global leader in application-focused measurement and analysis solutions, today announced that it has become a team supplier and technical partner for the Honda Racing F1 Team based in the United Kingdom (UK). The technical partnership will help the Formula One team comply with a number of changes to the Formula One Sporting Regulations established by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) for the 2007 and 2008 Formula One seasons.

A key part of the new regulations is to reduce costs, minimize engine damage risk, and ensure peak performance of the cars involved in Formula One by improving the reliability of the race engines. Each engine has to last two qualifying and race sessions otherwise a 10-place start grid penalty will be imposed. Consequently, the Formula One teams need to accurately monitor and measure the performance and potential degradation of engines, gearboxes and lubricant contamination.

“To help the Honda RA107 cars meet the new regulations and run at peak performance, it is critical to accurately measure and monitor engine and gearbox degradation as well as lubricant contamination to fully understand how these moving parts and lubricants perform over periods of intensive use,” said Gavin Aston, molecular spectroscopy European territory product line leader, PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences. “The measurements can determine when parts or oils need to be replaced while longer term the information can help guide the redesign of racecar components for maximum performance.”

The Honda Racing F1 Team will have a PerkinElmer Materials Laboratory at their UK headquarters to measure used oils and conduct testing on the car components. PerkinElmer will also provide training and support to Honda’s material scientists as part of the agreement.

The laboratory will use the PerkinElmer Optima™ 5300 ICP to measure the concentration of metal wear components of moving parts in lubricants and a PerkinElmer Spectrum™ OilExpress FT-IR System to measure organic-based lubricant contamination. Gaining information on inorganic and organic contaminants from the gearbox and engine oil will provide Honda with full spectroscopic insight into the performance of the lubricant in relation to the car’s performance.

“Honda F1 Racing has used PerkinElmer’s analytical equipment to great effect for a number of years to augment many of our operational and engineering activities,” said Gary Savage, operations director, Honda Racing F1 Team. “Our relationship now enters a new phase in which their very latest apparatus and expertise will be used in continuous feedback to enhance the performance and reliability of our race cars.”

The additional instrumentation will augment PerkinElmer infrared spectroscopy (Spectrum 100 FT-IR System) and thermal analysis (DiamondTM DSC, PyrisTM TGA and Diamond TMA) instrumentation already used in the Honda laboratory for materials testing. PerkinElmer will also analyze Honda’s samples at the PerkinElmer Seer Green, UK, facility using techniques such as infrared chemical imaging for micro scale material performance measurements.

This is the second motor-racing partnership for PerkinElmer. The company is also a partner of the Indy Racing League (IRL), which oversees 17 races in the United States, including the Indianapolis 500®.
